The First Women at the Olympics

Women competed in at least three sports at the 1900 Olympics. In which of these they were first invited to compete is a moot point – unless the question setter knows something I don't, in which case I hold my hands up (as the footballers say).

There was a competition for women in golf as well as tennis. Charlotte Cooper was the first woman to win an individual gold medal, but the very first woman to receive an Olympic gold medal was Hélène de Pourtalès, who was a member of her husband's winning crew in the 1 to 2 Ton sailing competition. Hélène de Pourtalès is also said to have been the first woman to compete in the Olympic Games.
